USB RJ12 FT232RL PDU Communication

This USB-to-RJ12 serial converter provides seamless, standards-compliant communication between modern computers and APC PDUs/UPS units originally designed for legacy RS232 connections. Based on the proven FTDI FT232RL chipset with hardware RS232 level shifting, it reproduces the electrical and logical behaviour of the APC 940-0144 cable — including correct voltage swing, impedance matching and handshaking line support. Dual-molded construction ensures mechanical reliability in rack-mounted environments. Confirmed compatible with APC metered and switched PDUs: AP78xx, AP79xx, AP86xx, AP88xx, AP89xx, AP7000, AP8000, AP9000, AP6000 and AP77xx series. Cross-platform driver support eliminates OS lock-in: Windows (XP–10, Server, x64), macOS (OS X and earlier), Linux (plug-and-play), Android, Windows CE.NET and Windows RT. No additional software or licensing required — connects directly to APC PowerChute, Nagios plugins, Zabbix serial checkers or homegrown Python scripts using pySerial. The FT232RL’s robust USB enumeration and error recovery prevent dropouts during firmware updates or high-frequency status queries. Targeted at enterprise IT teams managing mixed-generation infrastructure — replacing obsolete serial ports on new laptops, simplifying spare parts inventory, and enabling centralised power management across geographically dispersed sites using only USB infrastructure.
