Standard 90 mm diameter plastic petri dishes, each containing a pre-solidified, sterilised layer of Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA). Agar thickness is consistently maintained at approximately 4 mm to ensure optimal moisture retention and surface area for fungal colony development. Total weight per dish is around 12 g. Manufactured daily under cleanroom-aligned protocols using validated sterilisation methods; packaged in sealed, humidity-controlled blister packs to preserve sterility until first use. PDA supports the growth of a broad spectrum of fungi, including Aspergillus, Penicillium, Rhizopus, and common mushroom genera (e.g., Psilocybe, Pleurotus, Agaricus). The medium’s low pH (~5.6) inhibits many bacteria, enhancing selective fungal isolation — particularly useful for mushroom spawn testing or indoor air sampling where bacterial overgrowth can mask mold presence. Suitable for use in schools, home labs, small-scale cultivation operations, and citizen science initiatives. Requires no additional equipment beyond basic aseptic technique (e.g., alcohol flame, laminar flow hood or static air box recommended for opening). Store refrigerated at 2–8°C; discard if agar appears discoloured, dry, or contaminated.
