15 cm (L) × 10 cm (W) × 10 cm (H); weighs 320 g; contains approx. 280 ml of transparent nutrient gel, calibrated to nourish 10–15 Lasius niger or similar UK-native worker ants for 3–4 weeks. Housing made from BPA-free, impact-resistant acrylic; lid includes circular entry port (1.8 cm diameter) and laser-cut ventilation slots. Interior features tactile cues — gentle surface gradients and embedded texture zones — to guide natural tunnel orientation and brood placement. Observation extends beyond digging: children see trophallaxis (food sharing), antennal contact, corpse removal and coordinated load-carrying. The gel’s refractive index closely matches air, minimising visual distortion — critical for accurate drawing and measurement tasks in school settings. Deployed in over 200 UK home-ed families via The Home Education Network and recommended by the Field Studies Council for introductory myrmecology.
