23 × pure copper nails (3.5 in / 89 mm × 3.5 mm), 1 × 304 stainless steel nail (89 mm × 3.5 mm), 1 × cobalt HSS drill bit nail (2.7 in / 69 mm × 3.5 mm). Total mass ~280 g. Copper purity >99.9%; stainless steel complies with EN 10088-1; cobalt HSS meets ISO 4957 standards. All components tested for dimensional consistency and surface finish prior to packaging. Mechanism relies on copper’s biocidal effect within vascular tissue: Cu²⁺ ions bind to thiol groups in key dehydrogenase enzymes, halting ATP production and triggering programmed cell death in phloem parenchyma. Optimal results occur when nails are placed within 2 cm of the cambium layer — achievable using the included drill bit for controlled depth and spacing. Recommended for use on stumps ≤25 cm diameter in temperate UK climates. Effective on common species including birch, elder, hawthorn and apple — slower action observed on beech or horse chestnut due to higher tannin content. Not suitable for use in waterlogged peat or highly alkaline soils (pH >8.0) where copper solubility increases unexpectedly.
