Aluminium Gem Dichroscope

A precision-manufactured dichroscope with a 15mm functional aperture, fully encased in machined aluminium for durability and optical consistency. Internally, it uses a fixed calcite prism and polarising filters to generate two spatially separated, polarisation-dependent images of transmitted light through a gemstone. Used to detect and compare pleochroic colours in doubly refractive (dichroic) and trirefringent (trichroic) gems. By rotating the stone while observing through the device, users identify directional colour changes linked to crystal structure—key for separating orthorhombic, monoclinic, and triclinic species from cubic or hexagonal ones. No external power source, software, or consumables are involved.
